WAIKATO SETTLERS
Recollections of a varied life in which there was an abundance of hard work, many difficulties and the experiences common to early settlers and their families, were revived when Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Sutton, of Karaka, celebrated their golden wedding a few days ago. Mr. Sutton, although 84 years of age, still musters sheep and takes an active interest in his farm.
MR. AND MRS. C. L. SUTTON
As a boy, Mr. Sutton lived, with his father, Mr. Charles Sutton, on a farm at Omata, Taranaki. When the Maoris became restless his father sold the farm and went to live at Raglan.
"My father bought bullocks from the Maoris at Kawhia, and, at the age of 12, with a bullock-plough, I ploughed about 200 acres of farmland on our property at Raglan," said Mr. Sutton. "My father used to go to Kawhia every half-year to buy about 300 bushels of wheat from the Maoris. The wheat was pack-horsed for about 12 miles around Kawhia beach. Then it was my job to help load it on to bullock drays to take it the rest of the journey. After that my sister and I ground the wheat and made flour for bread-baking each morning." He built a windmill to drive the grinder. Even then it took the whole morning to grind 10 bushels of grain.
"I have done all sorts of jobs in my time," Mr. Sutton continued. "I ran a flax mill, and got between £27 10s and £33 10s a ton for my flax. For four years I was chainman for a Government surveyor, right in the heart of the bush, and we used to kill wild pigs and cattle to fill out our bill of fare. Then I drove coaches between Raglan and Hamilton. Often we had to swim the horses across flooded dips in the road near the Waipa River, and passengers went across in boats."
Mrs. Sutton, who is 67, can remember when butter was sold at between 4d and 6d a pound. Her mother was a music-teacher, and some of the settlers paid their children's fees in kind - so many pounds of cheese or butter every week.
