Thursday the 31st August 1876. DEATH - At half-past 8 o'clock yesterday morning, an inmate of the hospital, named Arthur Wallace, breathed his last. The deceased had been a sufferer from a severe attack of dropsy, and had an operation performed on Monday, Drs Earle and Tripe acting professionally. The patient succumbed to the effects of the disease and the operation, and died calmly. The deceased, Arthur Wallace, formerly belonged to the 65th Regiment, and has been living as a servant with Major Marshall, for a number of years. A brother resides on No. 2 Line, but we have not heard that there are any other surviving relations. The funeral will leave the hospital at 10 o'clock this forenoon for the cemetery.

There is a mystery of the marriage of Arthur Wallace and Mary Plunkett. Our best guess is that they met in Hobart, and that Mary was the daughter of the Mary Plunkett who was transported to Van Dieman's Land in 1841 for "theft of shirts". They may have married in Hobart or possibly in Sydney, but no record of the marriage has been found in the civil records for Tasmania, nor in the English records of British soldiers who married whilst serving overseas.
