The death occurred early this morning of Mr. John William Poulgrain at Braemar private hospital, following a seizure which he suffered some days ago. Deceased, who was 76 years of age, was one of the oldest and most prominent residents of Thames.
PROMINENT THAMES CITIZEN.
Born at Gisborne in 1859, Mr. Poulgrain received his early education at Auckland, coming to Thames in 1869. In December, 1871 he entered the service of the firm of Messrs. MacDonald and Miller, barristers and solicitors, Thames, and was one of the principals of this firm, now Messrs. Miller, Poulgrain and Garland, for an unbroken period of 60 years.
Mr. Poulgrain took an active interest in local body affairs, being elected to the Borough Council in 1895, and also to the Board of Governors of the Thames High School. The remainder of the estate is left to deceased's widow and family.
Well-known Resident.
The late Mr. Poulgrain was one of the best known and best respected men in Thames and his impressive personality made him an outstanding figure. Punctilious as regards dress he was known everywhere by his tall "billycock" and frocked coat, and his tall trim figure could be seen regularly every morning as he strode down to his office from his home in Tararu Road, about two miles away. Mr. Poulgrain was recognised as an expert in mining law and was greatly respected in his profession. He was known, too, as a very keen business man.
Mr. Poulgrain was born at Gisborne in 1859 and received his early education in Auckland. Coming with his father to Thames in 1869, he received further education at a private school, and in 1871, when only 12 years of age, he entered the employ of Messrs. MacDonal and Miller, barristers and solicitors. He remained with that firm and its successors, Messrs. Miller and Son, and Messrs. Miller, Poulgrain and Garland, for over 60 years. Mr. Poulgrain was actively interested in local affairs and was a strong supporter of the Anglican Church. He is survived by his wife, one son, Mr. Cecil H. Poulgrain, who is a partner in the present firm of Miller, Poulgrain and Garland, and one daughter, Miss D. Poulgrain.
