Notes - Thomas Brough was born in Dublin in 1824. He enlisted in the 65th Regiment in 1842 aged 17. He married Sarah Jane Carroll when 18. Both came to New Zealand in 1846, embarking on the 'Maitland' for Van Diemens Land in May, so they arrived in New Zealand a little later than the three Wallace brothers. Their first son John Maitland Brough was born at sea on the voyage from England. Thomas was stationed mainly in the Wellington area, and Wanganui. He won a War Medal.
Discharged in 1857, Thomas and Sarah Jane settled on a farm in a bay south of Onawe Peninsula, Akaroa, which soon became known as Brough's Bay. Of his large family, many took part in sports and pastimes, and his boys provided one of the well known Rowing Crews of Akaroa. Thomas's farm was called 'Harbour View Station'. He had a horse called Wild Irishman, which he raced at DuVauchelles Races in 1863. Two of his sons shone at athletics. Thomas was elected to Akaroa and Wainui Road Boards in 1873.
In January 1873 Sarah Jane died, aged 51. After a short period of mourning Thomas married again to widow Mary Tozer of Robinsons Bay. Thomas sold all his cattle (nearly 100 including 40 milking cows) and decided to go in for sheep. In 1876 Thomas and Mary moved to Wanganui, where they owned the 'Railway Station Hotel'. Later that year Thomas died, aged 52, and is buried in the Roman Catholic Cemetery at Wanganui.

Report of Death.
DEATH. - We regret to hear that Mr Thomas Brough, lately of the Railway Hotel, died last night. Mr Brough had been in feeble health for some time, and his medical advisers feared that the result would be fatal. The deceased had an extensive circle of acquaintances throughout New Zealand, who will regret to hear of his sudden demise. A widow and young family mourn his loss.
