Eric Watkins. Eric Watkins had the distinction of playing for New Zealand in both rugby codes, though in each he made just the one test appearance. He was in the New Zealand rugby side which in 1905, after most of the country's best players had left for the tour of Britain and France, met an Australian touring team in Dunedin.
Despite the absence of the cream of New Zealand's players the test was given full official status. Towards the end of his playing days Watkins switched to the new league code and along with several prominent rugby players, many of whom had been All Blacks, he joined the "All Golds" for their tour of Britain and France in 1907-08. Watkins appeared in an international against Great Britain.
Most of Watkins' rugby career was with Wellington, for whom he played in 40 representative matches between 1901 and 1906. A hooker in the front row formation of the old 2-3-2 scrum, Watkins played for Wellington with his Wellington College Old Boys partner, Ernie Dodd.
They were also together as the front rowers in the New Zealand team's test against Australia in 1905.
Watkins was a hard, rugged performer with a high work rate. He was also in North Island teams in 1904 and 1906.
Among other landmark matches in which Watkins and Dodd were together were Wellington's Ranfurly Shield win in the first ever shield challenge against Auckland in 1904. The pair were also in the shield loss to Auckland a year later.
Watkins moved from Wellington at the end of the 1906 season and after playing for Wanganui in 1907 then shifted to league.
