Notes OBITUARY
MR. GEORGE J. DUXFIELD
One of Matamata's oldest and most respected farmers, Mr. George J. Duxfield, died suddenly at his home close to Matamata on Sunday last. Deceased, who was 79 years of age, was born at Newcastle-on-Tyne, England, in 1857, and came to New Zealand in the s.s. Ruapehu in July, 1886.
Pioneer Matamata Settler
Mr. Duxfield came of farming stock, being a son of the late Mr. John Duxfield, of Waterworks Farm, South Gosforth, Newcastle, in the county of Northumberland. Other members of the family farmed in that county and in Yorkshire. When a depression occurred in the farming industry in England in the 80's the family migrated to New Zealand. For the first few years after landing Mr. Duxfield worked on the main trunk railway, assisting to build the station at Te Awamutu. Later he engaged in contracting at Whangarei. Towards the end of the 90's Mr. Duxfield commenced dairy farming at Point Chevalier, Auckland, but after six years took up the farm he occupied at the time of his death when the Matamata Estate was opened in 1904.
Mr. Duxfield throughout his life showed a keen interest in farming matters, and was a foundation member of the Matamata branch of the Farmers' Union and of the Matamata A. and P. Association. He also, served on the hall committee and school committee in the early days, and throughout was a staunch supporter of the Anglican Church, serving for many years on the vestry. Although of a retiring disposition, he was ever-ready to assist a good cause, but of recent years had retired from public life. Deceased is survived by a grown-up family of four sons, Messrs. G. F., S. R. and S. K. Duxfield (Matamata) and J. E. Duxfield (Puketurua), and nine daughters, Misses E. M. and H. E. Duxfield (Matamata), and Mesdames C. W. Blennerhassett (Litchfield), C. C. Dinsdale (Te Poi), S. J. Hewlett (Otorohanga), H. T. Munro (Tauranga), A. Long (Matamata), W. T. Bell (Auckland) and G. J. Hemsley (Waharoa). Three brothers, Messrs. F. W. and A. W. Duxfield (Wanganui), R. D. Duxfield (Horotiu), and one sister, Mrs. J. McLaren (Te Aroha), also survive him.
The funeral service was held on Tuesday, the Rev. G. F, W. Oulds officiating. There was a very large and representative gathering of settlers at the service and at the graveside, and also many beautiful floral emblems from friends and societies. The pall-bearers were the four sons and two nephews, Messrs. T. McLaren (Manawaru) and P. Duxfield (Wanganui).
