1952 Memorial Hall
Newspaper reports indicate that in March 1947 the Matawai Hall Committee was considering a new hall and had been raising money for the national war memorial fund. In 1948 the committee requested the Waikohu County assist with obtaining funds from Government to fund a new hall. The Council agreed and once plans had been prepared and community funds raised, a proposal was submitted. In 1949 the Government approved the plans and committed to contribute half the required funds for the project.
The Memorial Hall is a timber building, with a dance floor, and auditorium with stage and projection box, an adjacent supper-room and kitchen, a library and meeting room, together with a foyer with its two outer walls of glass. The auditorium seats are stored under the stage when the hall space is used as a dance floor.
The old Matawai Hall building had been sold to raise funds for the new Hall. Because the new hall was too large for the existing Matawai Hall site, obtaining additional adjacent land or a site on the main street was investigated. The Matawai Memorial Hall was built on the main street and opened in 1952.
The Memorial Hall was used for ANZAC Services, movies, meetings, school concerts and performances, dances, flower shows and social events. Saturday night movies ceased once television became available in the district.
In 2016 the 64-year-old hall was refurbished as part of a $75,000 upgrade. The memorial foyer now houses the Motu, Rakauroa and Otoko honours boards alongside the original Matawai one. The honour boards list men from the districts killed in the world wars.
Photographs of the Memorial Hall and Honour Boards are shown below the newspaper reports of community efforts to build the hall.

NEW COMMUNITY HALL WANTED AT MATAWAI
A request from the Matawai Memorial Hall Committee that the council should apply to the Government for a war memorial grant to enable a new hall to be built for use as a community centre at Matawai was favourably received at yesterday's meeting of the Waikohu County Council.
After some discussion it was decided that the council should apply for the subsidy available for the building of war memorials as community centres.

PLANS FOR MEMORIAL HALL ARE APPROVED
Advice to the effect that the proposed Memorial Hall to serve the hill country districts, had qualified for the Government £ for £ subsidy and that the sketch plans submitted had been approved, was received from the under-secretary of Internal Affairs at a meeting of the Matawai Memorial Hall committee recently.
In accordance with a request from the department, it was resolved that an architect be engaged to draw up the necessary working plans. Gratification at the culmination of the committee's efforts was expressed by members.
After discussion on ways and means of raising more funds for the memorial hall project, it was decided that a queen carnival be held on February 15, and to conclude with a gala day and dance on March 4.
Arrangements were finalised for a vice-versa dance to be held in the Matawai Hall on New Year's Eve. A discussion was also held on preparations for the annual flower show to be staged on February 11.
Those present at the meeting were Mr. B. B. Lockett, chairman, Mr. A. Marshall, hon. secretary, Mr. and Mrs. H. Bulst, Messrs. N. S. Gibson, N. E. Clark and B. Clark. Apologies were received from Messrs. R. M. Bilham and C. Hustler.

WORK MAY BE STARTED IN SUMMER ON WAR MEMORIAL HALL
MATAWAI NEWS
Within recent weeks great advances have been made with regard to the construction of the Matawai War Memorial Hall and it now appears certain that the hall will be an accomplished fact within the next few months.
Detailed plans and specifications are being prepared and it is hoped to commence work on its construction during the coming summer months.
The hall is to be a large modern building of wood, and is to comprise a dance floor, and auditorium with stage and projection box. a convenient supper-room and kitchen, a library and meeting room, together with an attractive foyer with its two outer walls of glass.
Now that the old hall has been sold the settlers are anxious that the new project be completed at an early date. The estimated cost is almost within reach: the outstanding funds still required only amount to £400 and it is hoped that this money will be raised before the work is commenced. The Government subsidy of £1 for £1 has been granted so that there should be no delay in undertaking the work.
The new hall will be invested in the Waikohu County Council, but the residents will have full control of its administration and maintenance.
On September 30 a grand finale dance is to be held in the old hall and this will be the last function prior to the hall being handed over to its new owners.
